were due to withdrawals of noney on deposit and their pay-

-ment to credit of Savings Bank Account. But in his reply

of the 8th. of June a different explanation is offered.

Inspector Reidie'e salary during

the period in question was at the rate of $125 a month

with double Exchange Compensation. Out of this he claims to

have saved $1,450 in 8 months.

With regard to query (b) Inspector

Reidie explains that about half the sun involved is repre-

-sented by his salary and by certain rent, while the other

half is made up of various payments to his credit of some

of which he appears to have a very hazy recollection.

During the period in question his

salary averaged $170 a month with double Exchange Compensa-

-tion, and his Banking Account (which will be found at

pages 2869 to 2871 of the evidence) shows that he withdrew

to credit of "self" no less than $2,085.88. Another

remarkable feature of the account is the large payments to

Inspector Reidie's credit in notes.

With regard to query (c), Inspect-

-or Reidie told the Commissioners that about $900 of the

sum in question was the proceeds of an old fixed deposit

with the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank while the balance was
